How Did BRIX Turn One-Product Orders Into Bigger Checkouts?

Many Shopify stores do not have a traffic problem.

← Back to case studies

Many Shopify stores do not have a traffic problem.

Customers visit the store, discover a product, add it to their cart, and complete the order. On the surface, everything appears to be working.

But there can still be a missed revenue opportunity.

When most customers purchase only one product, the store may be leaving potential revenue inside the cart. The question is not always, "How do we get more customers?" Sometimes the better question is, "How do we help existing customers discover more products they actually need?"

That was the challenge for an India-based FMCG Shopify brand using BRIX.

The brand already had customer traffic and regular purchases. However, many shoppers were completing single-product orders. BRIX helped change the shopping journey by making relevant combinations, complementary products, and cart rewards easier to discover.

Here is how the strategy worked.

Why Do Shopify Customers Place One-Product Orders?

Customers usually enter an ecommerce store with one immediate need.

They might arrive looking for:

  • A breakfast product
  • A skincare item
  • A supplement
  • A dress
  • A baby product
  • A household essential

Once they find that product, they may not explore the rest of the store.

This does not necessarily mean they are unwilling to buy another item. They simply may not know what else would be useful.

Shopify's current guidance explains that cross-selling works by recommending complementary products that help customers get more value from the original purchase.

If the store does not make those connections visible, the customer often follows the shortest journey:

Product → Cart → Checkout

That was the main opportunity BRIX needed to address.

What Was Missing from the Existing Shopify Cart?

A normal cart is designed to confirm an order.

It usually displays:

  • Product
  • Quantity
  • Price
  • Subtotal
  • Checkout button

That is enough to complete a transaction, but it does not necessarily help customers continue shopping.

For an FMCG store with several products that naturally work together, this creates a problem.

A customer may purchase one breakfast product without realizing another product could complete the meal. Another shopper may be only a small amount away from a free-shipping target but have no clear reason to increase their cart.

The goal was therefore not to fill the cart with aggressive promotions.

It was to make the next useful purchase easier to discover.

How Did BRIX Use Product Combinations to Increase Checkout Value?

The first change was making complete product combinations more visible.

BRIX's Combo Builder allowed the brand to organize related products into clear combinations instead of expecting customers to discover every item individually.

Imagine a shopper arriving for one breakfast item.

Without a combination, they may purchase only that product.

With a relevant combo, they can immediately understand:

"These products can be purchased together as a complete breakfast option."

That reduces the amount of searching and decision-making required.

This approach follows the wider ecommerce logic behind bundling. Shopify notes that complementary product bundles can help increase basket size while making it easier for shoppers to understand which items belong together.

The important part was relevance.

The brand was not grouping random products simply to increase the price of the cart. The combinations were built around how customers could actually use the products together.

How Did Frequently Bought Together Help Customers Discover More Products?

The next improvement was adding Frequently Bought Together recommendations.

This gave customers another way to discover complementary products without leaving their current shopping journey.

For example, instead of seeing only:

Product A - $333

the customer could also discover:

Frequently bought with Product B - $133

The additional product becomes easier to understand because it is shown in context.

This matters because customers do not always want to browse several collections before checkout.

Current Shopify guidance continues to recommend targeted upsells and cross-sells where the additional product closely matches what the shopper already intends to buy.

The recommendation should answer:

"Why would this product make my original purchase better?"

If that connection is obvious, adding one more product becomes a much smaller decision.

How Did BRIX Use Rewards to Encourage Bigger Carts?

Recommendations explain what the customer can add.

Rewards explain why they may want to add it now.

BRIX's Rewards Progress Bar gave shoppers a visible target inside the cart.

For example:

$167 more to unlock free shipping.

Instead of simply showing the current subtotal, the cart communicates that the customer is close to receiving an additional benefit.

This changes the decision.

A customer who is $133 away from free shipping may prefer adding a useful $167 product rather than paying a shipping fee.

Shopify's 2026 free-shipping guidance specifically notes that minimum-order thresholds can be used to encourage customers to spend more and increase AOV.

The target still needs to be realistic. If customers normally spend $400, a reward at $1,333 may feel unreachable.

The best threshold is close enough to make the next purchase feel achievable.

Why Did Product Recommendations and Rewards Work Better Together?

Each feature solved a different part of the customer's decision.

Combo Builder answered:

What products can I buy together?

Frequently Bought Together answered:

What else works with the product I already selected?

Rewards Progress Bar answered:

What do I gain by increasing my cart value?

That connection is important.

A free-shipping message alone tells customers to spend more but does not tell them what to purchase.

A recommendation alone shows another product but may not provide a reason to add it immediately.

When the two work together, the cart can say:

"You are $200 away from free shipping."

and then:

"Here is a relevant product for $233."

The customer gets both a reason and a suitable next action.

How Did BRIX Turn the Cart into a Product Discovery Area?

The biggest change was how the role of the cart was viewed.

Instead of treating the cart only as the final step before checkout, it became another product discovery point.

The customer could:

  1. Review the selected product.
  2. Discover a relevant recommendation.
  3. See a complete product combination.
  4. Understand the next reward threshold.
  5. Add another item without starting the shopping journey again.
  6. Continue to checkout.

This is also why the cart experience needs to remain simple.

Adding several unrelated popups, discounts, recommendations, timers, and banners can create friction.

The objective is not to make the cart busier.

It is to make it more useful.

Did BRIX Increase AOV by Giving Bigger Discounts?

Not necessarily.

Increasing AOV does not have to mean continuously offering larger discounts.

Discounting every product can increase the amount customers purchase while reducing the profit the store earns from those orders.

Instead, the strategy focused heavily on product relevance.

The customer saw:

  • Products that belonged together
  • Complementary recommendations
  • Clear reward milestones

Discounts and incentives can still be useful, but they work better when they support the buying decision rather than become the only reason to purchase.

Shopify's current AOV recommendations include several approaches beyond discounts, including bundles, cross-sells, upsells, and free-shipping thresholds.

What Happened After the Shopify Cart Was Optimized?

The FMCG brand had previously been generating approximately $23,330 in monthly revenue.

After BRIX was introduced as part of the brand's wider growth strategy, monthly revenue reached approximately $46,660 within one month.

The cart improvements included:

  • Combo Builder for complete product combinations
  • Frequently Bought Together for complementary recommendations
  • Rewards Progress Bar to encourage customers toward free-shipping thresholds
  • A stronger cart experience for discovering additional products

It would not be accurate to say that every rupee of revenue growth came from a single cart feature. Revenue can also be influenced by traffic, conversion rate, promotions, repeat customers, seasonality, and other marketing activity.

What the case demonstrates is that there was meaningful revenue opportunity after customers had already reached the store.

The brand did not need to treat additional ad spend as the only way to grow.

How Can Shopify Stores Turn Single-Product Orders Into Bigger Checkouts?

Start with your bestselling products.

For each one, ask:

  • What product naturally goes with this?
  • What do customers commonly need next?
  • Can these products become a useful combination?
  • How many orders currently contain only one item?
  • What reward threshold is slightly above the normal cart value?
  • Are recommended products visible before checkout?
  • Can customers add them without leaving the cart?

Then test one improvement at a time.

For example:

Week 1: Add one Frequently Bought Together recommendation.

Week 2: Test a reward threshold.

Week 3: Create a complete product combination.

Measure:

  • Average order value
  • Items per order
  • Recommendation acceptance
  • Combo revenue
  • Upsell revenue
  • Conversion rate
  • Revenue per visitor

The goal is not to make every customer buy more.

The goal is to make the right additional purchase obvious when it genuinely improves the customer's order.

Turning the Cart Into a Growth Opportunity With BRIX

Single-product orders are not always a traffic problem.

Sometimes customers are already prepared to buy, but the store is not helping them discover what comes next.

BRIX helps Shopify merchants turn that missed opportunity into a more useful shopping experience through AI-powered upsells, Frequently Bought Together, Combo Builder, Rewards Progress Bar, coupons, smart cart tools, and performance analytics.

Instead of using separate tools for every part of cart optimization, merchants can manage these experiences together and understand which offers are contributing additional revenue.

For Shopify brands already generating traffic, the next stage of growth may not begin with another advertising campaign.

It may begin with making the cart work harder.
